All about Cosmetic Surgery

With changing times, people are becoming more and more conscious about their looks and looks are playing an important aspect in self esteem of a person. People are ready to pay any price to meet beauty standards and are ready to go under knife to get the desired result. One of the means of getting their desired result is Plastic surgery.

Plastic surgery has two branches - Cosmetic surgery and reconstructive plastic surgery.

Cosmetic surgery is an elective operation that alters or enhances a part of face or body that you want to change, while Plastic surgery may include this or just reconstruction (reconstructive surgery).

Reasons people go for plastic surgery:
  • Accident marks
  • Birth defects or deformity or birthmark like cleft lip, ear deformities and skeletal deformities
  • Cancer(reconstructive breast surgery is common among women who have undergone mastectomy)
  • Massive weight loss where a person has lost huge amount of weight quickly and will have a lot of excess skin that refuses to shrink.  Removing the excess skin is a way to correct the appearance of the damage caused by obesity.
  • Vanity/self esteem/self image which lead people to cosmetic surgery. Mostly people opt for nose job, breast cosmetic surgery, tummy tucks, face lift and butt lift which is not just in case of women but also for men.

Cosmetic plastic surgery includes surgical and non surgical procedures that reshape normal structures of the body in order to improve appearance and self esteem.

Healthy individuals with a positive outlook and realistic expectations are appropriate candidates for cosmetic procedures. Plastic surgery is a personal choice and should be done for yourself and not to fulfill someone else’s desires or to try to fit an ideal image. Because it is elective, cosmetic surgery is usually not covered by health insurance.

Like any other surgery cosmetic surgery also comes with its risks. Following are the risks specific to Cosmetic surgery. The following are the few of the risks

  • Hematoma- It is a pocket of blood that resembles a large painful bruise. It occurs in 1-6 % of breast augmentation procedures and is the most common complication after a facelift. Hematoma is a risk in nearly all surgeries and treatment sometimes includes additional operations to drain the blood.
  • Nerve damage- risk is present in almost all types of surgeries. Numbness and tingling sensation are common after the surgery and can be signs of nerve damage.
  • Infection-Patients are given postoperative steps to reduce the risk of infection but even though it remains one of the common complications of plastic surgery.
  • Scarring-All the surgeries typically result in some scarring. Sometimes the scars are red and can be a little troubling if the surgery is to improve looks solely.
  • Not meeting the set goal- If the patient doesn’t meet the expected result and the resultant of the surgery doesnt merge with the other features it might lead to dissatisfaction.
  • Deep Vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism-Where in blood clots are formed in deep veins usually in the leg. When these clots break off and travel to the lungs it is known as pulmonary embolism although uncommon. These complications can be fatal
  • Organ Damage- Liposuction can be traumatic for internal organs. Sometimes visceral perforations or punctures can occur when surgical probe comes into contact with internal organs. Repairing these injuries can require additional surgery. The perforations may also be fatal
  • Anesthesia complications-Anesthesia might lead to complications like lung infections, stroke, and heart attacks. More common risks include waking up confused and disoriented and shivering.
  • Seroma-It is a condition that occurs when serum from the blood pools beneath the surface of the skin resulting in swelling and pain. It can occur in any surgery but most common in tummy tuck, these seromas can become infected. They are often drained with needle effectively removing them although there is a chance of recurrence.
  • Blood Loss- There would be some amount of blood loss in all the surgeries but uncontrolled blood loss can lead to a drop in blood pressure with potentially deadly outcomes. Blood loss can happen while on the operating table but also internally after the surgery

Cosmetic surgery cost 70 000 to 150000 INR which can increase as per the advancement or the intensity of the surgery. There are surgeons  that provide cheap cosmetic surgery but  we should do proper research before going for the surgery after all we have just one body

Recovery time varies from person to person depending on the types of cosmetic surgery and the level in advancement that they have gone for, And if their job is physically strenuous it might take more time to recover. They have to keep in mind the guidelines of the surgeon to avoid post surgery complications

Although it cannot be exactly told how long it will take to recover. But the approximate time for the common surgeries is
