This operation is done in men and the success rate is below 10%. Still, for urethral strictures this is a popular treatment. The process removes the unwanted tissues.

The risk involved in Optical Internal Urethrotomy

The risks involved in Optical Internal Urethrotomy are the followings:

  • Infection in the urinary track
  • Infection in the operated place
  • Wound dehiscence
  • Recurrence of urethral stricture
  • Excessive bleeding

OIU Post-operative care

You need to be very careful after operation. You will be given a catheter. It may remain for 2 days to 2 weeks. Few things you need to avoid after the surgery, like:

  • Do not lift heavy objects
  • Must drink 2 liters of water
  • Do not drive for a week

Cystoscopy with Internal Optical Urethrotomy (IOU)

Cystoscopy- inserting a small telescope into the bladder

Internal- Inside a structure (in this case the urethra)

Optical underneath direct visualization through the scope

tomy- "tome" or to cut

This process is done to open up a stricture (scar tissue) in the urethra.

The most common reasons to have a scar are:

  • a history of prior urethral procedure
  • an old injury to the urethra
  • history of gonorrhea or other infection (urethritis) involving the urethra

Soft scars that are very short may act in response to simple dilatation (gentle scattering with specialized instruments). Other may need a more formal course of action to maximize results and weaken the incidence of recurrence. Strictures can crop up in different places all the way through the length of the urethra. They also range in length. Success of the process correlates with location of the stricture, shorter length, and whether this is the first IOU procedure.

The other alternatives to Endopyelotomy are Dilatation, Open Pyeloplasty and Laparoscopic Pyeloplasty.
